Nova Scotia Polar Bear Dip 2013

Mags is down with a bad bug right now so we’ll have to wait until next week for her first post of the year. (Get well soon, Mags!) Instead, I wanted to share a New Year’s photo and story that made me proud…

That’s my brother Zach above, somersaulting into the frigid Atantic waters on New Year’s Day for an annual Polar Bear Dip 2013 in Nova Scotia. He’s usually the first one in since he’s the local padre and also because what’s cooler than a handsome and daring priest hurling himself head first into the harbor to kick off a new year? It brings out the paparazzi. Two years ago he landed himself on Canadian national television for it.

And kudos to him and his team — they raised a couple thousand dollars for their upcoming trip to Jamaica to assist the poor.

Here‘s the fun article in the Halifax paper about the New Year’s dip. The pics alone will make you smile — and also make you glad you’re sitting in a warm place right now.

Awesome picture! I took a dip once in the ocean off Antarctica, but his entry – not to mention his fundraising intentions – is/are too cool to compare!

Whoa – he is daring! I bet it goes a long way with his congregation that he does fun stuff like that.

BTW, I love the background views in the video — I’ve never been to Nova Scotia before and have only seen a few parts of Canada that border us here in Minnesota. Beautiful.

But the waters not even frozen over like it is when they do the Polar Bear plunges here in Minnesota! I haven’t and won’t ever do it, but do know a few that have. Nothing like the antics of a young priest to get the younger parishoners more interested. :)
